In 2014, His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, issued decree No. 6 of 2014 on the establishment of Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) in order to keep pace with the development and the rapid growth in the Emirate of Sharjah.

Since 2014, the authority has been keen to participate in supporting the achievements of Government of Sharjah and keeping up with the boom of Sharjah according to the vision of His Highness, May Allah protect him. SRTA is achieving several objectives by providing the most important services which are road and maritime transportation services, all transport facilities and activities and integrated public transport that provides high quality services, promoting the use of public transportation and establishing modern road network that are equipped with the most modern traffic systems according to international standards, managing roads and construction projects by studying, planning, designing, constructing and maintaining roads network, bridges and tunnels in a way that insures safety and security and is compatible with climate and environmental variables.

Moreover, SRTA oversees roads and transport sectors in the Emirate by creating short and long strategic plans of road projects to develop or construct the new projects in coordination with competent authorities, managing road infrastructure systems and projects, proposing toll gates systems, managing and organizing traffic sign boards and road marks of right of way and issuing initial approvals for billboards.

In addition to that, the authority formulates the general policy of transport sector, proposes necessary strategic plans to implement them, inspects transport sector, manages public transport, sets professional license conditions, standards and regulations for transport activities in the Emirate in coordination with competent authorities, trains taxi, public transport and intercity buses drivers and issues, renews and cancels professional license for drivers and all employees in various activities within the specialization of the authority.
